ABOUT ME
Writer . Editor . Photographer
I'm Krista. I report, write, and edit stories about people, places, and the natural world. My words and photographs have been published by Adventure Journal, The Atlantic, bioGraphic, Hakai, National Geographic News, Outside, Pacific Standard, Sierra, Smithsonian, The New York Times, the Utne Reader, and many other magazines and websites. My essays have been featured in books by WildSam and Yeti, and I wrote the children's book Explore! America's National Parks, published by Usborne. I've been a notable in several editions of America's Best Science and Nature Writing and America's Best Sports Writing. I've been also a contributing editor at bioGraphic, a multimedia magazine powered by the California Academy of Sciences.
I'm currently a senior editor at Hakai Magazine, where I write and edit stories about coastal science and societies. I'm also writing a memoir-in-essays about transience, the ways capitalism and colonialism rob people of a sense of home and belonging, and how to resist those feelings in an era that seems to amplify them. I'm represented by Wendy Strothman at Aevitas Creative.
Before becoming a journalist and essayist, I worked as a canoe and kayak guide, trail builder, daily news reporter, farmer, and teacher. I live in southwest Colorado.
